Missing IKEA screws: how to save your assembly without breaking everything
Missing IKEA screws: how to save your assembly without breaking everything
You are moments away from finishing. Suddenly, you realize a screw is missing. Your living room looks like a construction site and the furniture remains unstable. It is frustrating, but do not panic. Our complete IKEA screws guide helps you identify and replace every part.
Why am I missing screws during assembly?
Factory errors remain rare. The problem often stems from the furniture's life cycle. The second-hand market is a primary cause. The seller disassembles everything quickly to load their trunk. Small metal parts slip away and disappear.
Moving also causes losses. Hardware is grouped into poorly labeled bags. Sometimes the bag is thrown away with the empty cardboard boxes. Finally, personal modifications often require changing the structure. Original hinges or fasteners are then lost.
Safety precautions when assembly stalls
A missing part creates a real risk. A PAX wardrobe without all its screws has no rigidity. It can collapse at the slightest impact.
Immediately lay the structure on the floor. Place it on its back. Wait to receive your replacement parts before standing it up. Never leave a large piece of furniture unfinished in a vertical position. This is the most likely way to bend a panel.
Why avoid substitute screws?
Urgency leads to searching through the toolbox. One looks for a screw that resembles the original. This is a costly mistake.
Particle board does not forgive improvisation. An unsuitable thread destroys the pre-drilling. A diameter that is too large shreds the panel fibers. The furniture seems to hold for the moment. However, it will wobble after a few weeks. You will have then ruined the hole permanently.
The furniture wobbles: which part is missing?
This is a classic symptom. The boards are not flush. The furniture moves despite tightening.
The culprit is often the wooden dowel (ref. 101351). This part ensures alignment and absorbs forces. It often breaks during the disassembly of second-hand furniture. It can also be lost during unpacking. Without it, the structure loses its lateral stability.
The critical importance of the back panel
The back panel seems insignificant. However, it guarantees the squareness of the furniture. If it detaches, the furniture lacks rigidity.
The problem often comes from the back panel nails (ref. 100346). They are small and easily misplaced. Some bend during insertion. A poorly fixed back transforms your BILLY bookcase into a parallelogram. Replace them systematically to lock the structure.
The problem of the shelf that does not lock
You tighten the screw, but the shelf remains mobile. This is a mechanical locking problem.
The absence of the cam lock (ref. 110519) is the main cause. This small cylinder grips the head of the dowel. Without it, two perpendicular panels are not joined. The furniture appears stable, but it can open abruptly under a load.
How to identify a screw without the manual?
Did you throw away the paper manual? No problem.
Go to the official website or our platform. Type the name of your furniture into the search. Download the assembly instructions in PDF. Go to the "Hardware Inventory" section. Locate the drawing of your part. Note the numerical reference code.
For older models, search in online manual archives. The code is the only guarantee of full compatibility.
Can screws from another piece of furniture be used?
You have a KALLAX screw lying around. You want to use it for a PAX. This is risky.
IKEA uses hundreds of references. The length and diameter depend on the density of the panel. A screw that is too long will burst the wood on the other side. Only 8 mm dowels are truly interchangeable. For metal, always check the reference code.
Can wood glue replace a screw?
This is a bad idea. Glue reinforces a static assembly. It never replaces a mechanical tightening force.
Particle board absorbs glue irregularly. The bond often remains superficial. Above all, you make the furniture impossible to disassemble. On moving day, you will have to break the board to separate the elements.
The actual utility of the FIXA box
The FIXA range is useful for hanging frames. It contains generic wall plugs.
However, it contains no structural screws. You will find neither cam locks nor Confirmat screws. It is not useful for repairing the interior of a cabinet. For that, you need model-specific parts.
How to save a stripped screw hole?
A screw spins in place? The wood is torn. Do not force it.
Use the toothpick trick. Insert two wooden toothpicks into the hole. Add a dot of white glue. Cut the excess flush with the panel. Then screw your part back in. This recreates dense material. The thread can then grip again.
Choosing wall plugs for wall mounting
IKEA does not provide wall plugs. Every wall is different.
For drywall (BA13), use Molly bolts. They expand behind the plate. For concrete or brick, choose 8 mm nylon plugs such as Fischer. Avoid low-end plastic screw-in plugs. They fail under the weight of a tall cabinet.
Extracting a rounded-head screw
The Allen key slips? The screw head is stripped.
Place a wide flat rubber band between the screw and the key. The rubber band fills the gap. It provides the necessary grip to loosen the part. If this is not enough, use a very thin flat-head screwdriver to create a leverage point.
Regular maintenance of your hardware
Well-maintained furniture lasts for decades. Hardware is the key.
Check the tightening of cam locks every two years. This is crucial for loaded bookcases. A loose cam lock is adjusted in a few seconds with a coin.
Also check the screws of bed frames. Daily tensions loosen them. An annual turn of the Allen key prevents nighttime squeaking. Immediately replace any cracked plastic parts.
Where to find replacement parts quickly?
You do not have time to wait for delivery.
Go to the self-service spare parts kiosks at IKEA. Bring your part number. It is free and instantaneous. If the store is too far, you can also order without a reference number through our specialized shop. We group the most critical references to save you a trip.
