IKEA STUVA Spare Parts: Cam Locks, Hinges and Loft Bed Repair

The STUVA equipped millions of children's bedrooms between 2005 and 2020. The range is now being gradually phased out in favor of the SMASTAD. But the furniture is still there — and IKEA STUVA spare parts remain available for most critical components.

STUVA Range Variants

The STUVA is a system, not a single piece of furniture. It includes several families:

  • Loft bed — The flagship product, in three configurations: with integrated desk, with drawer modules, or a standalone frame. Overall dimensions: approximately 207 x 99 x 193 cm, headroom under bed of 142 cm. The ladder is positioned on the left or right during assembly. This choice is final.
  • Wardrobes — Two heights: 192 cm (full height) and 128 cm (low format). Width 60 cm, depth 50 cm in both cases.
  • 3-drawer chest of drawers — 60 x 64 x 30 cm (W x H x D). Can be positioned under a desk or as a standalone unit.
  • Toy chest and open modules — Mechanically simple. Lid hinges only for the toy chest.

The colored facades (white, blue, green, pink) are found on the doors and drawer fronts. The frame always remains white.

STUVA and SMASTAD: Zero Compatibility

This is the most common pitfall. STUVA and SMASTAD parts are not interchangeable. Neither the facades, nor the hinges, nor the assembly hardware. A SMASTAD door will not fit onto a STUVA carcass, even if the dimensions appear close.

Before ordering anything, formally identify your furniture. The name "STUVA" and the 8-digit reference number are printed on the label glued to the inside of the furniture (side panel or drawer bottom).

Loft Bed Maintenance: The Cam Locks

A STUVA loft bed that creaks has loose cam locks. This is not a defect — it's physics. Daily impacts (climbing, descending, jumping) rotate the turnings in the opposite direction of tightening.

Mandatory tightening every six months. Here's how:

  1. Locate all the cam locks: circular discs of 15 mm recessed into the panels. Count about twenty on the main structure.
  2. Use a flathead or Phillips screwdriver depending on the model.
  3. Turn clockwise to the horizontal slot position (= tightened). Do not force beyond this point.
  4. Test the rigidity after re-tightening.

This operation takes 15 minutes. It prevents damage that is much more difficult to correct.

In addition, check the Allen screws (4 or 5 mm) on the feet of the uprights and on the ladder fixings, once a year. A loose screw on a load-bearing foot can cause tipping.

Safety barrier: inspect the fixings of each slat twice a year. If a rail is cracked or a fixing is loose, replace the part before the next bedtime.

Wardrobe Hinges: The Real Problem Isn't the Hinge

When a STUVA door falls or comes off track, the hinge itself is rarely the cause. It's the fixing screw that has torn its housing in the melamine.

Replacing the hinge without treating the tear-out is useless. Procedure: glue a wooden dowel into the damaged housing, allow to dry for 24 hours, then re-drill and re-screw. Strong epoxy resin also works. If both points of the same hinge are torn out, shift the position by 5 mm towards a healthy panel area.

Drawer Slides and Back Panel

The STUVA roller slides age poorly. After several years, the rollers crack. These slides are a standard hardware item. If the original IKEA references are unavailable, search in general hardware stores: width 17 mm, length to be measured on the drawer.

The back panel in HDF can detach on loaded wardrobes. This is not structurally serious, but it weakens the whole thing. Solution: re-staple wide staples (10-12 mm) or small flat-head nails spaced 15 cm apart.

A broken cam lock can be replaced alone in less than 5 minutes. Unscrew the old turning piece, remove it, insert the new part, re-tighten. No need to disassemble the furniture.

The STUVA assembly instructions can be downloaded free of charge from the IKEA website (instructions section). If the range has been removed from the site, specialized platforms archive PDFs of discontinued references.
