IKEA SONGESAND: spare parts and repairs

IKEA SONGESAND: spare parts and repairs

The SONGESAND is a classic bed with a high headboard and footboard, with sculpted moldings in white melamine panel. Its design has a mechanical drawback: a high headboard is a significant lever arm on the side fixings. The connecting parts between the headboard and the frame are the first to fail — especially during a move. This guide covers the critical parts and documented issues with this model.

Which SONGESAND model do you have?

The range exists in two formats, both in white melamine panel.

Model Structural feature
Full size bed (140 cm) Standard frame, sculpted high headboard and footboard
Queen size bed (160 cm) Wider frame, longer frame supports

A version with 4 storage boxes under the mattress exists. It adds bottom panels and drawers to the basic assembly.

The SONGESAND only exists in white. But the same color is not enough to identify a part. Two generations of mounting plates have coexisted on this model. Before ordering, note the article number inscribed under the frame or inside a side panel. This is the only reliable identifier.

The critical parts of the SONGESAND

The mounting plates: the most frequently missing part

The mounting plates are the metal fittings that secure the headboard, footboard and frame rails. They absorb all the mechanical stresses. This is systematically the first part reported as missing or broken after a move.

Two references coexist depending on the generation of your bed:

  • Reference #139301 — mounting plate (initial generation)
  • Reference #116791 — mounting plate (recent generation, galvanized steel)

These two references are not interchangeable. Check the shape of the plate on your frame before ordering. The #116791 is the most commonly sold by third-party suppliers.

The associated screws have reference #105307. A plate without its correct screws will not hold. Verify that the replacement kit includes these screws and that the thread pitch corresponds to your original frame.

Wooden dowels and frame screws

The SONGESAND panels are assembled by a combination of wooden dowels (alignment) and panel screws (fixing). During disassembly, the dowels often remain stuck in a panel and break when removed.

These parts are available through the IKEA spare parts service by providing the article number of the bed. Standard IKEA dowels (diameter 5 mm) are also available in hardware stores — check the exact length before purchasing.

Common problems

Breakage of the headboard / frame connections during a move

This is problem number one with this model. The high headboard creates a lever effect on the side fixings as soon as the frame is handled horizontally.

During disassembly, never pull on the headboard to unlock the connection. First unscrew all the plates, then carefully separate the elements. If a plate is already cracked, replace it before reassembly. A compromised fixing often fails suddenly, without warning.

Headboard collapsing during use

Several user reports indicate a collapse of the headboard, sometimes within the first few days. The cause is always the same: mounting plates that are loose or incorrectly positioned.

The absolute rule: do not tighten the plates definitively until all the elements are aligned. Assemble the frame loosely, check the alignment along the entire height of the headboard, then tighten from bottom to top.

This assembly requires two people. Holding the high headboard in position while engaging the plates is impossible alone.

Slats that do not stay in place

If the slats do not stay in place or if the bed base sags in the center, check that the rails are horizontal. A loose plate can introduce a slight torsion in the frame. Enough for the slat supports to lose their support.

Compatibility with other IKEA beds

The SONGESAND shares its hardware parts with several other IKEA beds. The plates (#139301 / #116791) and screws (#105307) are compatible with:

Compatible IKEA model Type
ASKVOLL Single / double bed frame
BRIMNES Bed frame with storage
HASSELVIKA Classic bed frame
TARVA Pine bed frame
TRYSIL Nordic bed frame

If your SONGESAND needs a mounting plate, a solution listed for a BRIMNES or an ASKVOLL will work in most cases — provided you check the generation (#139301 vs #116791).

FAQ

Where can I find the SONGESAND assembly instructions?
On the IKEA website in the product sheet, in the "Assembly instructions" section. Also available on manuall.fr. The assembly order of the plates is counterintuitive without a diagram — the instructions are essential.

What is the difference between plates #139301 and #116791?
Both perform the same function. The #116791 is the recent version in galvanized steel. If your frame is old, the #139301 is probably the original. If in doubt, compare the shape with the photos available on Amazon listings before ordering.

The frame creaks at night: is it the mounting plates?
Not necessarily. A creak on melamine panel often comes from the contacts between the slats and their supports. Try felt washers at the contact points first. If the creaking persists, check the tightening of the plates.

Can the SONGESAND be used with a storage bed base?
No. The structure is designed for slatted bases (LURÔY or LÖNSET). A storage bed base requires a specific frame with a lifting mechanism.

Are spare parts available at IKEA?
Yes, via the spare parts service online or in store. Bring the complete article number with you. For mounting plates, third-party suppliers offer compatible kits on Amazon, often more readily available.
