IKEA PAX Replacement Parts: Repairing Your Wardrobe Without Getting the Generation Wrong

IKEA PAX Replacement Parts: Repairing Your Wardrobe Without Getting the Generation Wrong

The PAX is a wardrobe that needs no introduction. Millions of units assembled since the 1990s, almost infinite combinations, and generally correct sturdiness – provided you know how to repair what breaks first. The problem: the PAX underwent a major redesign around 2019-2020. Since then, ordering a part without verifying the generation of your wardrobe is the best way to receive an unusable part.

What You Really Have at Home: PAX Variants

Before looking for any part, you need to know exactly which PAX you have. The range is wider than it appears.

The frames (carcasses) come in three widths: 50 cm, 75 cm and 100 cm. In height, two options: 201 cm or 236 cm. In depth, it's either 35 cm (compact version, often with hinged doors), or 58 cm (wardrobe version, the most common).

The doors are either hinged or sliding. This is not just a matter of style – the two systems involve different frames, different hardware, and therefore different replacement parts.

Configuration Frame Width Depth Compatible Door Type
Small Wardrobe 50 cm 35 or 58 cm Hinged only
Standard Wardrobe 75 or 100 cm 58 cm Hinged or Sliding
Sliding System 150 or 200 cm (specific frame) 58 cm Sliding only

Frames for sliding doors are sold in kits of 2 (example: 200x236 cm in white, black or aluminum). They are not interchangeable with frames for hinged doors.

The Trap No One Tells You: Incompatibility Before/After 2020

This is the most important point. And the one that generates the most frustration.

Around 2019-2020, IKEA revised the PAX system in depth. New carcasses, new connectivity between frames, and above all a new sliding door system. Result: two generations of PAX that look alike but are not fully compatible on the hardware and rails.

What IKEA says officially: the new carcasses are compatible with the old ones, and you can mix the two to enlarge your wardrobe. However, the new sliding door frames and the new rollers do not work with the rails of the old system, and vice versa.

In practice: if your PAX dates from before 2020 and a roller breaks, you cannot order the roller sold today on the IKEA website. You need to find the part corresponding to your generation.

How do you know which generation you have?

  • Find the original assembly instructions (it contains a dated article number).
  • Examine the sliding frame: the old system has a top rail in aluminum profiled differently from the new one.
  • IKEA keeps the old instructions in PDF — the article number on the original box is your best lead.
  • The post-2020 PAX is assembled without tools (clip system). The old one required a screwdriver. This is a quick indicator.

If you have thrown all this away during a move, take a photo of the mechanism and contact IKEA customer service specifying the approximate year of purchase.

Sliding Doors That Come Off the Rails: Diagnosing the Rollers

This is the number one breakdown on a PAX with sliding doors. The door resists, jumps off the rail, or slides with a squeak. In 80% of cases, it's a worn or out-of-groove roller.

The rollers are the small wheels made of plastic or nylon fixed to the bottom of the door. They roll in the lower rail and bear the weight of the door. Over time, they flatten, crack or jam.

Quick diagnosis:

  1. Remove the door from its rail (lift upwards while pulling the base towards you).
  2. Turn it over and examine the rollers. A healthy roller turns freely. A dead roller is flat, cracked or blocked.
  3. Also check the lower rail: if it is dirty, clean it before reassembling.

Replacement is simple: the rollers clip or screw in depending on the model. The difficulty, once again, is to identify the correct roller according to your PAX generation. On the old system, the rollers are wider and mounted differently. On the new one, they are more compact and integrated into a plastic carriage.

Take a photo of the existing roller before ordering – this is the most reliable way to avoid an error.

Hinged Doors That Slam: Soft-Close Hinges

On PAX with hinged doors, the part that fails second is the soft-close hinge. These hinges incorporate a hydraulic damper that slows down the door at the end of its travel. Magical result when new, catastrophic result when the oil leaks or the mechanism jams: the door slams, bounces, or no longer closes correctly.

Good news: PAX hinges are 35 mm cup hinges, replaceable individually. No need to change the whole door.

Adjustment before replacement: PAX hinges have three adjustment screws (lateral, depth, height). Before replacing them, try adjusting. A door that slams on one side is often just misaligned, not broken.

If the soft-close no longer works at all (the door slams hard every time it closes), the damper is dead. Mandatory replacement.

Other Parts That Break

Wardrobe rails: two versions depending on the depth of the frame. For a 58 cm frame, the rail is longer and attaches differently than for a 35 cm frame. Do not order without checking.

KOMPLEMENT drawer slides: the PAX drawers (technically KOMPLEMENT drawers mounted in the PAX frame) are generally not sold separately. However, the metal slides are available as spare parts. If your drawer comes out of its slide or slides crookedly, it is often the slide that is twisted, not the drawer.

Frame-to-frame connecting screws: IKEA uses proprietary screws to assemble the frames. They cannot be replaced by standard hardware (different screw pitch, different head). If you lose some during a move, ask for them directly from IKEA Service Parts.

Maintenance Tips

Keep your IKEA layout drawing. This document contains all the article numbers of your configuration. Without it, reconstructing exactly what you have is a puzzle.

Never force a sliding door that resists. The instinct is to pull harder. Bad idea: you will deform the top rail or break the roller.

Clean the lower rail once a year. Dust, hair, fabric debris: everything accumulates in the groove of the rail and eventually blocks the rollers. A vacuum cleaner and a small brush are sufficient.

FAQ

Can hinged doors be converted to sliding doors on an existing PAX?
No. Frames for sliding doors are specific structures sold as a kit. You cannot add a sliding rail to a standard hinged frame.

Are KOMPLEMENT accessories compatible with all generations of PAX?
Yes. IKEA confirms that the KOMPLEMENT range (shelves, drawers, trouser racks) is compatible with all generations of PAX frames.

My PAX drawer is broken. Can I just buy the drawer?
The complete drawer is generally not available individually. KOMPLEMENT slides, however, are. If it is the structure of the drawer itself that is broken, the simplest solution is often to buy a new drawer in the KOMPLEMENT range.
