IKEA KLEPPSTAD Spare Parts: Complete Guide, Variants and Common Problems

IKEA KLEPPSTAD Spare Parts: Complete Guide, Variants and Common Problems

The KLEPPSTAD wardrobe is IKEA's entry-level storage solution. It ticks three boxes: a low price, a plain white finish, and reasonable dimensions for a small bedroom or hallway. But "entry-level" also means technical compromises that you need to be aware of before buying – and especially before assembling.

This guide covers the three variants in the range, the weaknesses documented by thousands of buyers, and answers to the questions that keep coming up on forums.

Three Models, One Design

The KLEPPSTAD range comes in three distinct references. It is important to know which one you have, as the parts are not all interchangeable.

Model Width x Depth x Height Closure Type
KLEPPSTAD 2 doors 79 x 55 x 176 cm Hinged doors
KLEPPSTAD 3 doors 117 x 55 x 176 cm Hinged doors
KLEPPSTAD sliding doors 117 x 55 x 176 cm Sliding doors

The height is identical on all three models (176 cm). The depth is also (55 cm, which is standard for a wardrobe). The main difference lies in the width and the closing system.

The 2-door model is the compact version. Ideal for small spaces, it fits where a 3-door wardrobe would not fit. Inside: a clothes rail and a shelf at the top.

The 3-door model offers a width of 117 cm, about 40 cm of additional storage. The internal structure is identical but additional shelf holes are drilled into the side panels – a detail that will be important in the "Shelves planned but unavailable" section below.

The sliding door model shares the same external dimensions as the 3-door model, but with a sliding rail system. This choice is relevant in narrow rooms where hinged doors lack space to open. However, it introduces its own mechanical constraints.

All three models are made of white melamine particleboard. No solid pine, no high-end MDF. Standard melamine, covered with a matte white surface. This is visible when you buy it, and it is accepted in the price.

What structures the wardrobe: an anatomy without surprises

The KLEPPSTAD wardrobe is based on a classic panel-by-panel construction: two vertical sides, a back panel, a top panel and a bottom panel, plus intermediate shelves if applicable.

The back panel deserves particular attention. It is made of HDF (High Density Fiberboard) of low thickness. It is not plywood. It is a rigid but thin sheet, slid into grooves on the sides and fixed with finishing nails provided in the kit. This panel has two functions: it stiffens the whole thing and prevents the furniture from warping. It is also its main point of fragility, and we will come back to it.

The hinged doors are mounted on standard IKEA cup hinges. The screws go into the particleboard. On the sliding doors, two horizontal rails (top and bottom) guide the movement via rollers fixed to the bottom and top of the doors.

Common problems: what buyers don't see in the instructions

Doors that don't close completely

This is the most frequent complaint on the hinged version. The doors stop a few millimeters from closing completely, leaving a visible gap.

This is not a systematic manufacturing defect: it is often a hinge adjustment problem. IKEA cup hinges have three axes of adjustment (depth, lateral, vertical). The instructions mention them but without detail. In practice, the small screws on the hinge body allow you to adjust the position of the door on the three axes until you obtain a clean closure.

Procedure: slightly loosen the lateral adjustment screws, bring the door closer to the frame until it makes clean contact, then tighten. Test the closure before tightening definitively.

If the doors close after adjustment but bounce back, check that the stop magnets (provided in the kit) are correctly positioned. Their height can be adjusted in the panel groove.

KLEPPSTAD sliding door rollers that fail

On the sliding version, several buyers report broken rollers very quickly after assembly – sometimes within the first few weeks of use. The lower roller, which supports the weight of the door on the rail, is the most stressed part.

The symptom is clear: the door becomes difficult to slide, comes off the rail, or leans forward. Inspecting the bottom of the door reveals the roller split or simply come out of its housing.

The cause is often twofold: a rail that was not aligned during assembly (even the slightest misalignment creates permanent lateral pressure on the roller), and a plastic quality of the part itself deemed insufficient for daily use.

During assembly, check the alignment of the rails with a level before placing the doors. A slightly crooked rail multiplies the stress on the rollers.

The back panel falling off when moving the furniture

This problem is specific to the nature of the HDF back panel. Once the wardrobe is assembled and the finishing nails are hammered in, the back is held in place. But it is not mechanically locked: it rests in grooves.

If you move the wardrobe after assembly – by pulling it on a floor, by lifting it slightly on one side – the vibrations and stresses are enough to dislodge the back from its grooves. It can bend, split at the level of the nails, or simply fall off.

The absolute rule is therefore: assemble the wardrobe in its final location. Do not move a mounted KLEPPSTAD. If you have to move, disassemble it.

Panels splitting when inserting dowels

Particleboard tolerates less stress during insertion than solid pine or thick MDF. Several buyers report splits appearing in the panel when hammering in the wooden dowels with a mallet.

This happens mainly when the dowel is misaligned with the hole or when you force it with too much momentum. Repairing a cracked melamine panel is delicate – once cracked on the surface, the crack can widen under load.

Tip: before hammering in each dowel, check the alignment by hand without forcing. The dowel should go in with finger pressure for the first few millimeters. If it resists, check the orientation of the panel.

Shelves planned but unavailable

The side panels of the 3-door and sliding door models have visible adjustment holes inside the wardrobe. These holes are there to accommodate shelf supports and allow the addition of intermediate shelves.

IKEA offers a separate KLEPPSTAD shelf, but its availability is not guaranteed permanently in store or on the website. Check before counting on it to organize your storage, as the dimensions vary between the hinged and sliding versions.

Wall mounting: a step that no one takes and everyone should take

The assembly instructions provide for wall mounting with the safety fitting included in the kit. This fitting is often ignored. This is a mistake.

The KLEPPSTAD wardrobe, like all IKEA tall furniture, can tip over if a child hangs on it or climbs on it. At 176 cm high and with a depth of 55 cm, the center of gravity is high. A loaded wardrobe represents several tens of kilograms.

Wall mounting takes ten minutes. It requires finding a stud or a plug suitable for the type of wall.

If your wall is plasterboard without an accessible stud at the location of the wardrobe, use a plasterboard molly plug rather than a simple plastic plug. The load to be retained is not zero.

What to remember before ordering an IKEA KLEPPSTAD spare part

The KLEPPSTAD is a recent range (early 2020s). The product history is therefore short. Before ordering a replacement part, have the article number of your furniture, visible on the label glued to the inside – the three versions have distinct references, and the parts (KLEPPSTAD hinges, KLEPPSTAD sliding door rollers, shelves) are not necessarily identical between the 2-door and 3-door models.

The most requested parts are unsurprisingly those that bear the daily mechanical stresses: rail rollers on the sliding version, hinges on the hinged versions, and interior shelves for those who want to densify the storage.

FAQ

Can you paint a white KLEPPSTAD wardrobe?
The melamine surface is poorly porous. A classic paint does not adhere well without preparation. You must lightly sand with a fine grit (180-220), apply a special melamine adhesive primer, then paint. The finish will be clean on flat surfaces, but the edges remain a weak point.

Are KLEPPSTAD hinges compatible with other IKEA furniture?
IKEA cup hinges often have a standard diameter of 35 mm. Some hinges from other ranges may be mechanically compatible, but the number of screws and the geometry of the arm vary. It is better to order the specific KLEPPSTAD hinge to guarantee proper adjustment.

My sliding door roller is broken. Can I replace it without disassembling the entire door?
Yes, in most cases. The lower roller is fixed with a small screw accessible from the bottom of the door. Loosen the screw, remove the roller, replace it, and re-engage the door on the rails starting with the upper rail.

How many shelves does the wardrobe come with?
None. The wardrobe includes a clothes rail and a fixed top panel. Intermediate shelves are optional and must be ordered separately – check availability according to your model before counting on them.

Can you move the KLEPPSTAD once assembled?
Technically yes, but it is not recommended. The thin HDF back panel is held by grooves and finishing nails. Transporting it after assembly can deform it or dislodge it from its grooves. Disassemble the wardrobe before any move.
