IKEA KALLAX Spare Parts: Screws, Dowels, Inserts — The Complete Guide

IKEA KALLAX Spare Parts: Screws, Dowels, Inserts — The Complete Guide

You ordered an IKEA dowel for your KALLAX bookcase. It doesn't fit. It might be an EXPEDIT dowel. The two look alike, but they are not interchangeable. This guide provides the exact references and pitfalls to avoid.

What the KALLAX is (and what it isn't)

The KALLAX replaced the EXPEDIT in 2014. The visible difference: the outer walls have lost about 1 cm in thickness. The EXPEDIT measures ~4.8 cm. The KALLAX measures ~3.8 cm.

What hasn't changed: the internal dimensions of the cubes, still 33 x 33 cm. This size is what makes the KALLAX the reference for LP vinyl collectors. A 33 rpm record fits perfectly, without forcing.

Direct consequence: KALLAX and EXPEDIT hardware are not interchangeable. Neither the dowels nor the KALLAX/EXPEDIT screws. This is the primary cause of ordering errors.

KALLAX Variants: Which Configuration?

The KALLAX comes in 5 formats, all based on an outer cube of 42 x 42 cm:

Format Cubes Dimensions (W x H) Typical Use
1x1 1 42 x 42 cm Bedside table, additional element
2x2 4 77 x 77 cm Desk, children's corner
4x1 4 147 x 42 cm Low console
2x4 8 77 x 147 cm Living room storage
4x4 16 147 x 147 cm Storage wall, vinyl collection

The KALLAX can be used vertically and horizontally. The 4x4 lying down as a TV cabinet is one of the most common configurations. Simply adapt the legs or casters accordingly.

Inserts: The Real Modular Asset

The inserts measure 33 x 33 cm and fit any KALLAX cube. Four types are available at IKEA:

  • Insert with drawers (1 or 2) — for documents and accessories
  • Insert with hinged door — effective concealer
  • Insert with shelves (2 or 4 levels) — subdivides the cube
  • Insert with vertical divider — for categorization

EXPEDIT inserts from previous generations are compatible with the KALLAX. Since the internal size is identical, they fit without problems.

Identifying the Correct Spare Part

Two families of hardware, incompatible with each other.

Wooden Dowels

Model IKEA Reference Compatibility
KALLAX #101339 KALLAX only
EXPEDIT #101352 EXPEDIT only

The two dowels look visually similar. The difference is in the diameter and length. An EXPEDIT dowel in a KALLAX may crack the wall or make the assembly unstable.

The KALLAX instructions indicate 10 dowels for a standard assembly. Some configurations with a shelf insert require 12 dowels. Count the housings before starting.

Fixing Screws

KALLAX screws (#104321 / #104323) are shorter, sized for 3.8 cm walls. EXPEDIT screws are longer. Screwing an EXPEDIT screw into a KALLAX may pierce the wall. The reverse provides insufficient support.

Common Problems

The insert jams or does not close correctly.
Main cause: the cube is not level. A few millimeters of twist are enough to block a door or jam a drawer. Place a spirit level on the inner frame before tightening.

Dowels are missing at the end of assembly.
Do not force it. Order the missing parts via the IKEA customer service before finishing the assembly.

Your EXPEDIT has a structural part broken.
KALLAX inserts are compatible, but the screws and dowels are not. Order the specific EXPEDIT references.

Can the KALLAX hold the weight of vinyl records?
A cube filled with 33 rpm records easily weighs 6 to 8 kg. On a fully loaded 4x4, we approach 100 kg. For a dense collection, fix the furniture to the wall without exception.

FAQ

Can EXPEDIT screws be used on a KALLAX?
No. EXPEDIT screws are designed for thicker walls. They can damage the walls of the KALLAX.

Are third-party inserts reliable?
Generally yes. Verify that the manufacturer guarantees the exact size of 33 x 33 cm. A few millimeters of difference render the insert unusable.

I lost the instructions. Where can I find them?
On the IKEA website, "Assembly Instructions" section. Search for "KALLAX" with the number of cubes in your configuration. The instructions are downloadable free of charge in PDF format.
