IKEA HURDAL: spare parts, common problems and repairs

IKEA HURDAL: spare parts, common problems and repairs

The HURDAL is the IKEA bed made of solid pine wood. Where the HEMNES focuses on staining, the HURDAL showcases the natural texture of the wood, knots included. If you are looking for an IKEA HURDAL spare part or if the frame is creaking, this guide covers the real issues with this model.

Which HURDAL model do you have?

Model Structural feature
Queen bed frame (160 cm) Solid pine, head + foot assembly with frame bolts and wing nuts
King bed frame (180 cm) Same assembly system, longer side rail

The naturally unstained finish of the HURDAL is its strength and its weakness. Bare wood appears at the slightest scratch. Small scuffs can be treated with neutral wood wax.

The HURDAL assembly system

The frame is based on the same principle as the HEMNES. Frame bolts pass through the head and foot posts to anchor into the side rails. They are tightened using wing nuts housed in recesses.

Tightening does not occur directly in the wood, but via an embedded metal nut. The wood moves around this nut, especially during the first few weeks. A frame assembled in January may show noticeable play in April.

Re-tighten the frame bolts 3 months after initial assembly. This is not optional on an untreated solid pine bed. The HURDAL wood – without a waterproofing stain – reacts more to humidity variations than the HEMNES.

Common problems with a HURDAL bed

Structure creaks

This is the number one problem with untreated solid pine beds. The HURDAL creaks. This is not a manufacturing defect. Pine absorbs and releases moisture, creating micro-movements at the assembly points.

The sources of creaking are identifiable:

  • Head/side rail joint: the bolt has moved. A quarter turn is enough to eliminate 80% of the noise.
  • Slatted bed base on its supports: the slats rub against the pins or stops. A few shavings of paraffin (an ordinary white candle) on the contact areas will solve the problem.
  • Foot of bed assembly: same treatment as the head, same diagnosis.

If the creaking persists after re-tightening, partially disassemble the joint. Apply a layer of beeswax to the wood contact surfaces, then reassemble. The wood slides slightly instead of creaking.

Screws loosening in the wood

Solid pine is a relatively soft wood. An over-tightened screw compresses the fibers until they break. Result: the screw spins freely.

The repair is simple. Remove the screw. Push one or two toothpicks coated with wood glue into the hole. Let dry for 12 hours. Cut flush. You have reconstituted dense wood around the thread. Reinsert the screw without forcing.

Never use a screwdriver on the HURDAL frame. Manual tightening only. The goal is to eliminate play, not to compress the wood.

Slatted bed base

The HURDAL slats are standard bent wood slats. They split under significant point impact, or sag in the center if the bedding is heavy without a central reinforcing slat.

A broken slat can be replaced individually. Check the width (63 cm for Queen, 73 cm for King) and the curvature before ordering.

What you need to know before ordering a HURDAL spare part

The HURDAL is a low-volume production range. Some specific parts may have longer lead times than on the HEMNES.

Good news: the frame bolts and wing nuts of the HURDAL are shared with the HEMNES range. These parts are available in standard customer service and are generally shipped quickly.

Before contacting customer service, note the article number printed on the label under the headboard or under a post. This number distinguishes the Queen from the King and identifies the exact series of your product.

FAQ

My HURDAL bed creaks from the first few months: is this normal?
Yes. Untreated solid pine "works" intensely during the first 6 months, especially during seasonal changes. Re-tighten all bolts after 3 months. Most of the creaking disappears.

Are HURDAL slats compatible with HEMNES slats?
Potentially, if the dimensions match. Imperatively check the width and length before ordering. The two ranges do not systematically use the same dimensions depending on the size of the frame.

How to protect the natural wood of the HURDAL from stains?
Apply a coat of linseed oil or furniture hard oil after assembly. This protects without altering the natural appearance. To be renewed every 2 to 3 years depending on the humidity of the room.

Which part to order urgently for a move?
The frame bolts and wing nuts. These are the parts most often lost. They are shared with the HEMNES: short lead time, available in standard customer service.
