Which BILLY version do you have?

The BILLY primarily exists in widths of 40 cm and 80 cm. The depth is standard (28 cm) and heights vary.

The essential thing to know: the hardware is almost identical across all models. Whether you have a narrow or standard version, the fastening parts remain compatible.

Why is my BILLY shelf sagging?

This is the most common failure. The shelf slides or tilts under the weight of the books. The culprit is often the shelf support (ref. 101345).

This small pin can bend or pop out during cleaning. Sometimes, the hole in the side panel widens, and the shelf no longer rests flat.

Tip: replace the plastic pin with a 5 mm steel model. Metal is more resistant to shearing and stabilizes heavy loads.

My furniture is wobbling, what should I do?

If your bookcase moves, it is no longer square. The problem usually comes from the structural locking.

Check your cam locks (ref. 110519). They ensure the connection between the walls. If a cam lock breaks, the furniture loses its rigidity. The cam screw (ref. 118331) can also be bent.

Replace the defective part. Tighten firmly, but without forcing. Particle board breaks quickly in case of over-tightening.

The back of my bookcase is warping, is it serious?

The back panel seems fragile, but it prevents the furniture from tilting sideways. If the back nails (ref. 100001) fail, the furniture becomes unstable.

This is the "parallelogram" effect: the furniture tilts and the shelves are no longer horizontal. Nails often pull out during moves.

Pro tip: replace the nails with 3.5 x 15 mm wood screws with small flat washers. Screw every 20 cm for maximum rigidity.

How to prevent shelves from bending?

The "belly" in the middle of the shelf is inevitable over time. The particle board fatigues under the weight. This is a material limitation.

If the curvature is too pronounced, change the shelf. Distribute your books better: place the heaviest ones at the bottom.

To reinforce the existing shelf, glue a small wooden strip under the shelf. This limits flexion and extends the life of the furniture.

Tips for durable assembly and repair

Assembly determines the longevity of your BILLY. Apply these three rules:

Squaring before the back.

Measure the two diagonals of the frame. They must be identical. If they are not, push the furniture slightly before fixing the back. Otherwise, your shelves will never be straight.

The choice of wall plugs.

The BILLY is tall and narrow. It tips over easily. Forget the provided plastic plugs. Use Molly bolts for drywall or Fischer UX for concrete.

The screwdriver bit.

Do not use a standard Phillips screwdriver (PH2). Use a Pozidriv bit (PZ2). It fits IKEA screws perfectly and prevents stripping the heads.

Compatibility with other brands

You cannot mix IKEA with other brands. The widths seem standard, but the drillings differ.

Drilling the particle board to adapt a third-party door weakens the structure. Use only IKEA spare parts compatible with BILLY bookcases to guarantee strength.

For handles, it is different. The "system 32" is universal. Any standard handle fits if the center-to-center distance matches.
