Compatible IKEA spare parts: the guide for repairing your furniture
A screw giving way in a METOD cabinet and the whole kitchen seems worn out. A sagging door, a jamming drawer: these failures are common. Fortunately, most IKEA furniture can be repaired with the correct compatible spare parts.
Which ranges are compatible with each other?
IKEA evolves its models. A BILLY from 2010 differs from one from 2024. The depth often changes from 28 to 30 cm. Always verify this measurement before ordering.
For KALLAX, it is simpler. Old EXPEDIT inserts still fit. PAX remains a modular standard. KOMPLEMENT accessories fit almost all frames.
| Range | Point of attention | Major evolution |
|---|---|---|
| BILLY | Depth (28 vs 30 cm) | Reinforced fasteners |
| PAX | Frame depth | Clip-on hinges |
| BESTÅ | Frame dimensions | Increased modularity |
Why is my cabinet door sagging?
This is a classic failure. The door tilts and no longer closes. Often, the chipboard panel has given way. The screw spins in place because the fibers are torn.
The solution is simple: the combination of toothpicks and white glue. Fill the hole. Let it dry. Cut the excess. Screw back in your hinge (ref. 100000). It is fast and sturdy.
If your drawer jerks or comes off the rail, the plastic roller is likely broken. The ball bearing may be worn. Replace the complete slide (ref. 128315). Do not attempt to glue the plastic; it will not hold.
Can fasteners be modified and panels be drilled?
Be careful with wall fasteners. BESTÅ or METOD furniture use steel rails. The back of the furniture is too thin to support a load. Using it as an anchor point is dangerous. The furniture risks collapsing. If the original rail is missing, replace it with the original IKEA part.
Also be wary of honeycomb panels, such as those on LACK tables. This is honeycomb cardboard. A screw outside the reinforced zone will pull out at the first sign of stress. Never add casters to these areas. You would destroy the mechanical safety of the furniture.
Finally, never replace a SKORVA bed beam with a simple wooden batten. The steel beam maintains the squareness. A batten does not resist tension. The bed base will eventually collapse abruptly.
Which parts are truly universal?
Handles are a clear example. IKEA follows the "System 32", a global standard. The hole spacing (distance between holes) is standard: 96, 128, or 160 mm. M8 legs are also standard. Simply check the diameter, as some old models use M6.
For hinges, IKEA often collaborates with Blum. UTRUSTA models use a 35 mm cup. You can therefore use standard Blum Clip Top hinges. Check the opening angle (often 110°). Always replace them in pairs to avoid tension.
For BILLY shelves, avoid plastic supports. A full shelf can weigh 30 kg. The plastic eventually shears, causing a cascade collapse. Prefer steel supports (ref. 101355).
How to successfully repair without breaking everything?
The secret lies in the tool. Use a Pozidriv (PZ2) screwdriver. A classic Phillips head damages the screw heads.
Set your screwdriver to a low torque. IKEA wood is dense on the surface but fragile at the core. Excessive tightening causes the panel to burst. Always finish the last turns by hand.
Regarding walls, choose the correct anchor. Plasterboard requires Molly anchors. Concrete requires nylon. IKEA provides the brackets, but rarely the anchors suited to your wall.
If a cam lock (ref. 110519) spins in place, do not force it. Check the alignment of the pin. Adjust it by a quarter turn, then tighten.
Simple repairs (screws, hinges) are accepted and fall under the right to repair. Conversely, drilling a hole or modifying the structure voids the IKEA warranty.
Verify your dimensions with a caliper and identify your reference. Your furniture will last another ten years.
