IKEA sofa spare parts: the guide to repairing and saving your living room
An IKEA sofa is not disposable. Its modular design allows almost every element to be replaced, from the leg to the fixing screw. Identifying the correct spare part helps avoid a costly and unnecessary purchase.
Why is my IKEA sofa squeaking?
A squeaking sofa often suffers from loose joints. On the KIVIK or KARLSTAD ranges, the blocks are fixed by large steel rods. Over time and with movement, they shift.
Remove the cushions. Lift the cover via the Velcro. Firmly tighten the bolts with a 13 mm wrench.
If a screw is missing, use the original reference. IKEA's alloy resists shear forces better than a generic bolt. An unsuitable part risks bending and damaging the wooden structure.
My FRIHETEN sofa bed is stuck, what should I do?
The FRIHETEN mechanism is heavily used. A cracked roller on the retractable carriage or one that has come off its axis often blocks the opening.
The rail spacing is specific. A generic wheel will block the system. Replace it with the exact model.
Also check the springs of the chaise longue. If the storage box falls heavily, the spring is slack or the anchor is bent. Handle these parts with caution: a spring under tension can pinch violently.
The seat is sagging, how to save it?
Sagging does not always come from the foam. Comfort relies on "Nozag" (zigzag) springs tensioned under the cushions.
These springs are held by clips. If a clip breaks, the spring detaches. You then feel a "hole" in the seat. Identify the broken clip, order the replacement, and retension everything with locking pliers.
If the foam is worn, add a 3 cm high-resilience (HR) foam overlay under the existing cushion. This restores loft without changing the appearance of the furniture.
My modules are drifting apart, how to fix them?
On SÖDERHAMN or VIMLE models, the sections sometimes slide. The problem comes from the metal junction plates.
These plates pinch the wood to hold the modules. If they are bent or missing, replace the connection hook.
Field tip: for a permanent hold, use black nylon cable ties (Rilsan) under the chassis. It is invisible and more robust than plastic connectors.
How to disassemble your sofa without losing anything?
For a move, disassemble the armrests first. This reduces the width and makes it easier to move through stairs.
On the SÖDERHAMN, peel back the Velcro gently. The back fabric is thin and tears easily.
To avoid losing any screws, use a freezer bag. Place the washers and nuts inside. Tape the bag directly to the wooden structure, under the cover.
Tips for a durable assembly
Most IKEA legs use a standard M8 thread. You can therefore install third-party legs to raise your seat.
If the screw thread in the wood is stripped, do not force it. Screw a universal fixing plate onto a healthy part of the wood, then screw in your leg.
For tightening, prefer a hexagonal bit on a ratchet screwdriver rather than the provided Allen key. You will avoid rounding the screw heads or stripping the chipboard.
Finally, maintain your sofa-bed mechanisms with a PTFE dry lubricant spray. Unlike grease, it does not attract dust.
