IKEA screw reference: how to identify and replace your missing parts?
IKEA screw reference: how to identify and replace your missing parts?
The assembly is almost finished. Suddenly, you realize a single screw is missing. Everything stops. It is frustrating, especially after two hours of effort.
Swedish engineering is precise. Each fastener has a specific structural role. Improvising an emergency solution weakens the whole. An unsuitable screw can destroy the pre-drilling of the chipboard. This error is often irreversible.
The different types of IKEA screws
IKEA mixes industrial standards and proprietary parts. Three families dominate.
The Minifix system is the core of the assembly. It uses a metal bolt and a 15 mm circular cam. This is the classic invisible assembly. Hex head (Allen) screws ensure the heavy structure, such as on MALM beds. Finally, Euro screws (5 mm) fix the hinges and rails.
Why does my furniture move despite tightening?
The panel wobbles or detaches. You tighten it hard, but nothing changes.
The problem often comes from the cam lock. The head of the housing has broken or the wood has crumbled. The locking no longer occurs.
Replace the defective housing. The cam lock (ref. 110519) will restore a rigid structure to your furniture. Do not attempt to glue metal back into the wood.
Why is my cupboard door sagging?
Your PAX or METOD door leans downwards. This is common on heavy furniture.
The fixing screw has often torn out of its housing. The chipboard is soft. The weight of the door has created play.
If the hole is slightly enlarged, insert a toothpick with wood glue. Then screw it back in. If the hole is destroyed, replace the hinge screw (ref. 110520). A new anchor point will save your door.
How to find your IKEA screw reference?
Each part has a unique numerical identity. This is the only reliable information to avoid mistakes.
Open your assembly instructions. Look at the first pages. You will find the visual inventory of the hardware. Locate the drawing of your part. Note the 6-digit code located right next to it.
This is your IKEA screw reference. If you no longer have the paper, download the PDF from the official website. This code guarantees absolute compatibility.
Can a standard DIY screw be used?
It is risky. You have a box of wood screws on hand and want to finish quickly.
IKEA screws, such as the Confirmat screw, have a specific profile. They grip the chipboard without bursting the melamine. A standard screw is often conical. It acts like a wedge.
It violently pushes apart the fibers of the compressed wood. The furniture seems held, but it will quickly develop play. It will eventually wobble. Always prioritize the original reference.
How to fix your IKEA rails to the wall?
IKEA does not provide wall plugs. The brand does not know the nature of your walls.
For METOD rails or PAX wardrobes, the choice is crucial. On Plasterboard (BA13), use exclusively metal Molly bolts. They expand behind the board. Plastic self-drilling plugs will pull out under the weight.
For concrete or brick, opt for 8 mm nylon plugs. The screw must anchor at least 50 mm into the support.
Pro tips for a durable assembly
Assembly requires a method.
Manage your cam locks with care. Never turn beyond 180 degrees. If it blocks, check that the pivot is fully inserted. Use a perfectly suited flat-head screwdriver.
Replace your Allen keys. L-keys are tiring. Use hexagonal bits on an electric screwdriver. Set the torque to the minimum to avoid stripping the screw head.
Finally, practice stabilization tightening. Compressed wood settles. Schedule a general retightening 15 days after assembly. This eliminates play and creaks.
What to do if a wooden dowel breaks?
The wooden dowel (ref. 101351) is fragile. If you force it, it breaks cleanly in the hole.
Do not try to remove it with a flat-head screwdriver. You risk damaging the panel. Gently drill the remaining piece with a very fine drill bit. Extract the shavings.
If the hole is too wide, put a drop of wood glue. Insert a new dowel. The furniture will be stronger than before.
